Miranda Bruyn, Consultant Occupational Therapist

About Miranda

I bring more than 30 years of experience across occupational therapy clinical practice, injury management, disability services, research evaluation, relationship management and organisational systems.

My career has included:

  • Occupational therapy practice in hospitals, community health, workplace rehabilitation and disability services
  • Executive-level public service work evaluating health and medical research programs
  • Injury adviser and relationship management roles with self-insurers and private employers
  • Consultancy across complex physical, psychosocial, cognitive and neurodevelopmental presentations
  • Collaboration with individuals, families, clinicians, employers, insurers, service providers and legal professionals

This breadth of experience allows me to move between clinical evidence, workplace realities, service systems and decision-making contexts without losing sight of the person whose life is affected.

My professional perspective is also informed by lived experience of disability and neurodivergence. This contributes to my understanding of the gap that can exist between what appears possible on paper and what is genuinely accessible and sustainable in everyday life.

The Occupation Matters Story

I founded Occupation Matters as a sole practitioner occupational therapy practice in 2018 in Melbourne, providing individual occupational therapy services and functional assessments for adult NDIS participants, contract occupational rehabilitation services, as well as DVA and TAC therapy services.

Now, in 2026, I have pivoted into occupational therapy consultancy services where I can work collaboratively and expertly with multidisciplinary conferences, provide quality medicolegal functional assessments and appear as an expert witness, deliver clinical education and supervision, and take on clinical lead role across the disability, health and workplace rehabilitation sectors.

I also provide clinical supervision and mentoring to occupational therapists, as well as tailored occupational coaching programs for those seeking to make a significant transition in their career due to a disability, illness or major life change.

How I work

My approach remains person-centred, affirming, inclusive, trauma-informed and strengths-based.

I lean in and learn from my clients. I do not assume that every difficulty sits within the person. I consider the fit between the person, the occupations they need or want to undertake, the environment around them and the systems they are required to navigate.

I adapt communication, assessment and consultation processes to accommodate sensory, cognitive, communication and access needs. In coaching and therapeutic work, the person’s goals, autonomy, identity, priorities and consent guide the process.

In independent and medicolegal work, respect and accessibility sit alongside impartiality, transparency and objective clinical reasoning. My role is to examine the available evidence, identify relevant limitations and uncertainties, and clearly explain the basis for my conclusions.

Whether I am coaching an individual, reviewing a complex case, advising a multidisciplinary team or providing an independent opinion, the focus remains the same:

Miranda brings clarity to complexity, translates information and evidence into insight, and navigates practical next steps.
